Step into Safety: Keem Home Care's Guide to Fall Prevention for Seniors

For older adults, preventing falls is crucial for maintaining independence and overall well-being. While falls may seem inevitable with age, there are effective strategies to reduce the risk. In honor of Falls Prevention Awareness Week (Sept 18-22), Keem Home Care highlights four recommendations from the CDC to help seniors and their loved ones prevent falls:

  1. Consult with Your Healthcare Provider:
    a) Schedule a comprehensive evaluation with your doctor to assess your risk of falling.
    b) Request a review of your medications from your doctor or pharmacist to identify potential side effects like dizziness or sleepiness.
    c) Promptly inform your healthcare provider if you experience a fall, have concerns about falling, or feel unsteady.
  2. Engage in Strength and Balance Exercises:
Strengthen your legs and core through exercises tailored to your needs. Consult your doctor for a personalized exercise program.
  3. Prioritize Eye and Foot Health:
Have your eyes examined annually by a doctor and obtain glasses with the appropriate prescription for activities such as walking.
Schedule a yearly foot check with your healthcare provider, discussing proper footwear and the possibility of consulting a foot specialist.
  4. Create a Safer Home Environment: Eliminate trip hazards like throw rugs, electrical cords, and pet toys.
    a) Install grab bars in the bathroom and next to the toilet, add railings on both sides of stairs, and ensure adequate lighting throughout your home.
    b) Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and on bathroom floors, and choose well-fitting shoes for indoor wear.
    c) To assess your risk of falling, consider using the Falls Free CheckUp tool provided by the National Council on Aging (NCOA). Additionally, the NCOA offers a helpful infographic that can be printed and shared with others.
